"I have caught hold
of the earth, to use a gardener's phrase, and neither my friends nor enemies will find it an easy matter to transplant me again!"

Henry St. John
  (1678-1751) in a letter
to Jonathan Swift.

Van Bakel's Garden Center. Proudly serving Newmarket & East Gwillimbury gardeners with quality plants since 2004.

We're gardener's too, and when those catalogues arrive in winter we just can't resist expanding our inventory selection to bring in lots of new varieties and colours.  We want you to find something different when you visit each spring, not just the tried and true.

Here's just a few of the new plants we'll have this year.

Buddleia Blue Chip Lo & Behold. Shorter flower heads than regular Butterfly Bush, but lots more of them! Van Bakel Greenhouse, NewmarketBuddleia Lo & BeholdŽ 'Blue Chip'
A breakthrough variety of buddleia, Butterfly Bush, with the same great fragrance and butterfly appeal!   Buddleia 'Blue Chip' stays in a compact rounded form approx. 24" - 30" without any pruning, and blooms continuously from mid summer to frost.  Great for containers!   Buddleia Blue Chip Lo & Behold. A new compact variety of Butterfly Bush that's great for containers. Van Bakel Greenhouse, Newmarket

Plant in full sun to partial shade, and while it's drought tolerant once established, it would prefer average garden soil conditions with adequate moisture.

Echinacea purpurea 'Kim's Knee High'Echinacea purpurea Kim's Knee High. At under 24" tall, this dwarf selection can be put to completely different use in a perennial garden's design. Van Bakel's Newmarket
A terrific selection of our native Purple Coneflower.  Compact at only 18" - 24" high, it makes a great plant for the front of the perennial border or for containers. Flowers are deep pink with the typical orange - dark brown cone, the petals drooping gracefully. Deadheading (removing fading flowers) will greatly increase the flowering period. Seedheads have good winter interest and birds and butterflies love this plant!Outstanding for cutting or even as dried flowers. A versatile plant for the late summer perennial garden, with more usefulness than the regular tall Purple Coneflower.
Echinacea (Coneflower), Hot Papaya. Flowers open single petaled and then develop a full petaled pom pom center. A delightful new cultivar!Echinacea 'Hot Papaya'
A favourite from the recent wave of great new Echinacea hybrids.  (Last year we just couldn't keep it in stock, and this spring we have a limited supply.)  A rich red double-flowered Coneflower with drooping ray petals, surrounding a  pompom centre.  This the reddest "red" coneflower yet.  Plant habit is well-branched, strong and bushy, at 30" - 36" tall. Ideal for sunny borders and as all Coneflowers, is attractive to butterflies. Excellent for cutting and drying. Coneflowers begin blooming in midsummer and continue for months if deadheaded regularly.

more to come!

Hybridizers are working fast and furious to bring us dwarf varieties of many of our classic garden plants.  Use them in containers for something different, and protect the container over winter to take advantage of their perennial growth habit for a second year of use!  If you don't want to fuss with winterizing your planters, transplant perennials into the ground in late September to overwinter where their roots will be save from the constant free/thaw of a container.
